In the overpaid world of Major League Baseball, big bucks oftentimes equal championship glory. Just look at the last four World Series victors, including the San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees, all of whom dropped some serious scrilla on players’ salaries in order to bring home a title.
Then there’s this year’s Arizona Diamondbacks, who are incredibly likely to make the playoffs despite one of the least-expensive rosters in the entire MLB. Too bad we can’t say the same for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who went from being contenders in July only to fade to pretender status as the summer dragged on. Although the D-Backs and Buccos combined salaries this season total less than that of the reigning World Series champion Giants, the Pirates’ carriage has indeed turned into a pumpkin while Arizona has an increasingly realistic shot at the pennant.
The D-Backs can help their cause this week by throwing a little more dirt on the Pirates’ grave during their series against the Buccos, which concludes with an afternoon game on Wednesday, September 21, at Chase Field, 401 East Jefferson Street.
