We’ve gotta admit that when it comes to our participation in Valley Metro’s annual Bike to BOB event, the season’s the reason. That is, if it’s shaping up to be a banner year for the hometown Diamondbacks, we don’t mind pedaling down Central Avenue for a win at the end of the line. Apparently, our priorities are outta whack, since last year’s event brought down more than 1,400 riders (and we know how last season went). “I don’t think the Diamondbacks matter so much,” says Susan Tierney, the coordinator of Valley Metro’s RideShare program. “How often do you get to ride down Central Avenue with a police escort?” At least once a year, as a matter of fact, with the 2005 3.3-mile Bike to BOB taking place Sunday, April 24, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Margaret T. Hance Park, on Culver between Central and Third Street. The $14 registration fee includes a ticket to the game, vs. the San Diego Padres at 1:40 p.m. Call 602-262-7433. –Joe Watson

The martial arts fighters of Rage in the Cage will host a housewarming party of pain on Saturday, April 23, as they compete in their first event at their new long-term home, Glendale Arena, located at 9400 West Maryland. We couldn’t navigate our way through a Jacuzzi with a GPS. But what the hell? We’ll take our chances at the “Full Moon Over Phoenix” adventure race on Saturday, April 23, at Bartlett Lake, about 20 miles east of Carefree. The race combines nearly 25 miles of kayaking, running and biking with the “challenge” of nighttime navigation, starting after sunset (7:05 p.m.). Unlike Wonder bread sandwiches, not all third-grade habits need be outgrown. Revisit the playground fun of swings and slides by enlisting in “Sweat in the City: The Boot Camp for the Urban Warrior” at Margaret T. Hance Park, at Third Street and I-10. “This creative workout class will utilize everything from playground equipment to park benches to trees,” says Wendy Reese. She promises a “fun, mutually encouraging environment,” which means this basic training thankfully will be devoid of lavatory detail and drill sergeants screaming “Maggot!” in your ear.
