The former Traveling Wilbury is on a roll these days — in addition to reuniting his pre-fame band Mudcrutch for a much-appreciated CD, he has found a growing number of younger fans during his current tour. According to reports, a large number of 20-somethings have flocked to his shows alongside his fellow baby boomers, thanks to the enduring popularity of his songs. There’s also the fact that The Heartbreakers are a great live band. Petty delivers what is expected of him and more, packing the set with hits such as “American Girl,” “Free Falling,” and the more recent “Saving Grace.” And he does throw an extra ounce of energy into the songs and often breaks into a jam with guitarist Mike Campbell and the other band members. There is also the bonus of having Steve Winwood on the tour. The keyboardist and guitarist, who joined the tour as the opening act, often joins the Heartbreakers on stage — and once that happens, everything becomes joyfully unpredictable.
