Phoenix Photographer Rosalind Shipley: 100 Creatives

Phoenix is brimming with creativity. And every other year, we put the spotlight on 100 of the city’s creative forces. Leading up to the release of this year’s Best of Phoenix issue, we’re profiling 100 more. Welcome to the 2014 edition of 100 Creatives. Up today: 10. Rosalind Shipley.

“I am either preparing for class, teaching, reading, or cooking.”

Rosalind Shipley has a schedule and she’s sticking to it. And for good reason. The 36-year-old Phoenix photographer graduated from ASU’s master’s of fine arts program in studio art in 2013, after studying photography and art history at Maryland Institute College of Art. Since then, she’s kept busy in the classroom, teaching classes around the Valley.

“I am teaching three photography courses at the moment, and each course is a big, semester-long project,” says Shipley, who is an adjunct professor at both Mesa Community College and Arizona State University. Courses she’s currently teaching include a hybrid online and in-person class on photographic portraiture that Shipley developed.

But her work goes well beyond the classroom. She has exhibited work nationally at venues including the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Inidana, and her essays on photography have been published in the Journal for the Society for Industrial Archeology and the upcoming Solari Collection Catalog.

I came to Phoenix with a large-format view camera.

I make art because art is a way to understand life.

I’m most productive when… I’m not being too hard on myself.

My “inspiration wall” is a digital collection of articles and a bookcase full of photography books.

I’ve learned most from my family, my friends, and my teachers.

Good work should always be challenging.

The Phoenix creative scene could use more challenging art.
