Pierce the Veil is a better band than its associations make it out to be. Yes, the group is currently on tour with crabcore jokers Attack Attack!, and frontman Vic Fuentes got a little too excited about using Auto-Tune on PTV’s new album, Selfish Machines. But the heart of the band’s hyperactive post-hardcore is a strong sense of melody and pop songcraft, along with a surprising amount of respect to Fuentes’ Mexican heritage. Sure, it can get buried sometimes over caterwauling vocals or acrobatic guitar lines, but the point is, these kids can play. Now if they’d just get some nice haircuts and lose the neon shirts, Pierce the Veil would likely outlast the entire current crop of screamo bands.
