The baseball-card-collector subculture is a far cry from that of a generation ago. Two decades back, folks could purchase packs of Topps and Fleer with pocket change. Today, one pack of cards, costing more than a gallon of gas, includes half the quantity, zero stats, and no stinking gum.

One way to get the most out of these cardboard heroes is to attend the Phoenix Card Show. The memorabilia expo is a pitching bonanza featuring Arizona Diamondbacks hurlers Dan Haren, Micah Owings, Doug Davis, and Max Scherzer, who’ll sign autographs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Ex-Diamondbacks skipper Buck Showalter will dole out John Hancocks from 1 to 2:30.

Autographs range from $20 to $35.
