Just as things are starting to cool down, Phoenix becomes the hot spot for word-based battling. The 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam sets the city on fire this Friday, October 10.

Competition is thick with local favorites like Myrlin Hepworth and Joy Young mixing it up with lauded wordsmiths from all over the country including Franny Choi of Providence, Rhode Island, viral video poet Jesse Parent of Salt Lake City, and returning IWPS champ & former valley resident Ed Mabrey. In addition to audience voting determining winners at each stage, workshops and open mics abound for anyone feeling wordy.

The 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam takes place Thursday through Saturday at nearly a dozen downtown and central Phoenix venues, with the finals being held on Saturday night at the Marquee Theater, 730 North Mill Avenue in Tempe. All-event passes are $60, while tickets for just the finals are $34. For the full event schedule, visit www.iwps.poetryslam.com.
