Hobbits, orcs, and elves aren’t the first things that come to mind when you think of politics, unless you’re medieval literature scholar and one of the leading scholars on Tolkien Tom Shippey. While Tolkien’s works have been discussed time and time again in the realms of philosophies, moralities, and even a few religions, politics don’t really come into play much. Shippey plans to change that as he discusses the wisdom and warning we can take from Middle-earth and apply to our own world during his lecture “Politics in Tolkien: What We Can Learn from Hobbits” on Wednesday, April 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at ASU’s Old Main, 400 East Tyler Mall in Tempe. Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
