In the 1970s, the Campaign to End Pay Toilets in America (CEPTIA) destroyed the last of the coin privys. Old as we are, we remember mother telling us to “crawl under the stall” when she didn’t have the requisite dime. Tempe Little Theatre takes it one belly-crawl further with Urinetown: The Musical.
What if Big Brother outlawed private toilets and citizens were forced to use public toilets at a cost? And what if Big B hired G-men to check your regularity? And if you cheated, off you went to Urinetown? Sounds grim, but true love conquers all — sorta — in Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis’ outrageously popular creation. Of course it’s popular. It’s bathroom humor. This is America.
