Here’s the thing about hiking: You’re either a lone nut like us or a people person. For the latter, hiking doesn’t get much better than the City of Scottsdale’s free Preserve Connections Hiking Tours of the northeast Valley’s still largely restricted McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Or simpler. Or cheaper. After registering, just show up for the 8 a.m. check-in. From there, you’ll be bused to the Preserve and then taken on a guided trek by Certified Conservancy Stewards, whose insights are much more elegant than their titles. The trek is a challenging 4.5-miler on the Sunrise Trail for experienced hikers only.
