Wouldn’t it be great if everyone followed Twitter’s example? CBS’ long-winded news program would be whittled down to 10 Minutes and Obama’s State of the Nation could be communicated in 140 characters or less: “Gas prices down, home prices up, and the private sector is doing fine. Really.” Seven local playwrights will prove that brevity really is the soul of wit in Theatre Artists Studio’s Summer Shorts 2012, on stage through Sunday, June 24, at 4848 East Cactus Road in Scottsdale. This year’s selection of 10-minute plays includes a quirky comedy about a singing spider, a peek inside the mind of a therapist, and a scenario involving an intense customer service battle over airline miles.
What’s the benefit of these dramatic quickies? “Doing short plays challenges playwrights to get an idea across in a limited amount of time,” says publicity director Julie Lee. “And from an audience point of view, if you don’t like one of the plays, you can stick around for ten minutes and see another one.”
