Sometimes it feels like the LGBTQ community has hijacked the rainbow and that the rest of us can’t rock a vintage Care Bears T-shirt without raising a few eyebrows. But you know what? Our LGBTQ friends have had a hard enough path; they deserve a few rainbows. And with the tides of change flowing increasingly in their favor, a symbol representing the passing of a storm seems more appropriate than ever.

So whatever your sexual orientation may be, you’ll likely discover a whole lot of optimistically oriented people at this year’s Rainbows Festival, hosted by Phoenix Pride. “Arizona’s greatest street fair” boasts two stages, each jam-packed with lineups that are nearly as diverse as the audiences are sure to be. The festival will also feature craft beers aplenty, good food, and god knows what else. Find out for free at 10 a.m. at Heritage Square Park, 113 North Sixth Street, on Sunday, October 19. Visit www.phoenixpride.org or call 602-277-7433.

Sat., Oct. 18, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 19, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 2014

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
