Contrary to what’s been portrayed in pop culture, Arizona history is not just about cowboys and dusty trails. With his monthly Retro Spectacular program, local historian Marshall Shore hopes to educate other residents on the Grand Canyon State’s rich heritage.
Shore became interested in Arizona history while working as a librarian. “I’ve been here about 11 years, and people started telling me I knew more about their hometown than they did,” he says. “It’s really about people, and in some ways, a lot of what I’m doing is listening to people tell their stories.”
Shore presents his research in a slideshow format, sharing anecdotes while displaying historical images, in order to paint a rich picture of how far the state has come and what has influenced it along the way.
