Lance Greathouse has a major yen for flames and fire. Thankfully, the local dental laser technician parlays his obsession into constructive, rather than destructive, purposes. Over the past decades he’s built blaze-blasting robots and vehicles, which spew glorious blossoms of flame into the air. For example, his devilish “El Reactor” is a pitchfork-shaped device that unleashes a trio of burning propane-fueled plumes skyward.

Greathouse’s planning on bringing “El Reactor” to the inaugural Maker Faire Phoenix along with a few of his other imaginings, including badass-looking techno chariots and a motorized grill. It’s the sort of event that’s made for tinkerers like Greathouse, as it will showcase DIY devices of every shape and size. Crafters, backyard scientists, engineers, and artists of every variety will trot out their contraptions and creations to Roosevelt Row to help inspire and awe those in attendance.

Meet the makers at Roosevelt and Third streets.

Sat., Oct. 15, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., 2011
