Now that a sweltering summer has been put behind us, we’re up for anything that reminds us that seasons exist. We might still have sweaty days, but our night temps are dipping low, which means the Mid-Autumn Harvest Moon Festival will be the perfect occasion for fall to plant its flag in Phoenix.
Initially established more than 3,000 years ago by moon worshippers of China’s Shang Dynasty, modern-day celebrations of the harvest moon are more reminiscent of Thanksgiving, where gratitude for prosperity and family are expressed and select foods are eaten for good luck. You can be sure to find moon cakes (circle-shaped grub made from duck eggs, sesame seeds, and ground lotus seeds) and traditional dragon and lion dances to signal the true sign of fall.
