Forget the Cheeto-loving-slacker stereotype you associate with skateboarding. Truth is skateboarding and creativity are inseparable. After all, super-complicated tricks like Shaun White’s heel-flip body-varial frontside 540, which won him an X Games gold medal, take a whole lot of imagination to arftully orchestrate and execute. (Fun fact: White’s the only skater to ever successfully pull off said trick.)
It’s no surprise, then, that artists will use skate decks (y’know, the board part of the skateboard) as canvases for the show “Hit The Deck.” 20-some Arizona creatives, including Joe Dragt, Noelle Martinez, and 2Des, will, er, deck out said boards with a look all their own.
The show opens from 6 to 11 p.m. in conjuction with First Friday on July 5 at Phoenix Art Space, 901 North Fifth Street. Admission is free. For details, visit www.facebook.com/events/378624712237492.
Fri., July 5, 6-11 p.m., 2013
