No Night & Day entry was ever adapted into an acclaimed film starring Queen Latifah, and, thus, we’ve got nothing on The Secret Life of Bees author Sue Monk Kidd, who ventures to Tempe, thanks to Changing Hands Bookstore, to sign her latest novel, The Invention of Wings. Situated in Charleston in the early 19th century, this coming-of-age tale of a well-to-do daughter and her urban slave handmaid focuses on their intertwined growth while navigating a world full of oppression and heartache. The strength the pair earns along the way takes them where they want to go and sets them to helping others. Based on true characters, it’s something that gets Kidd talking. Ask her; she’s wildly charming.

Meet Sue Monk Kiddat 7:30 p.m. at Dobson High School Auditorium. The signing is free with book purchase ($27.95). Call 480-730-0205 or visit www.changinghands.com.

Thu., Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m., 2014
