Who wants to see John Travolta create drag travesty as Edna Turnblad in the upcoming big-screen remake of Hairspray? The original Edna, portrayed by the wickedly delicious Divine in the 1988 original, was, shall we say, truly divine. Irony draped in satire, Divine was born to wear Edna’s charmingly frumpy smocks, while Mr. Travolta’s stilted delivery and fat suit probably has Divine twirling in his pink, sparkly grave. If we want to see someone hiding in the closet, we’ll watch Saturday Night Fever or the South Park Scientology rerun for some dancin’-disco-queen action. Luckily for us, we can see the real drag deal at Miss Sassy’s Sirens of Seduction. Pageant girl Miss Sassy and her fellow divas of drag whip up some dragtastic hijinks, performing standards and contemporary hits alike in sparkles and perfect makeup that would make Dolly Parton jealous. A word to the wise: It’s considered poor form to wear more glitter and feathers than the performers, so leave the Bob Mackie dress and coordinated head piece at home.
Fridays, 9:30 p.m. Starts: June 1. Continues through Nov. 30, 2007
