The play is based on the true story of Ruth Snyder, the calculating killer who conspired to murder her husband in 1927 — providing the inspiration for the 1944 film-noir masterpiece Double Indemnity — and became even more creepily famous when a stealthy photojournalist snapped her frying in Sing Sing’s chair.
