Elementary, my dear Watson! Well, not quite. Arizona Theater Company’s Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, playing now at the Herberger Theater, puts a twist on the classic detective drama.

With The Suicide Club, playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has taken Sherlock and his trusty sidekick Watson out of Victorian London and into another sleuth story. The play is based on a series of short stories by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde author Robert Louis Stevenson about another detective. Now, it stars Mr. Holmes, and, instead of being set in the vilest and lowest streets of turn-of-the-20th-century London, Hatcher has re-cast the tale in 1914, the year before the start of World War I.

“It is a real mystery,” says ATC Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein. This will be his 20th Anniversary show with the company and he has a challenge for the audience: “Figure out, at intermission, whodunit.” Good luck!
