South Mountain Community College invites literary buffs to perfect their storytelling craft with a weeklong series of events led by acclaimed storyteller, three-time Emmy Award winner, and Circle of Excellence Oracle Award winner Bobby Norfolk.

SMCC’s Storytelling Institute will kick off this week of special events with “Dissecting Story.” This two-part discussion session will look at the universal traits shared by stories of all cultures and regions and be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, February 10 and 11.
On Wednesday, February 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Performance Halls, guests can hear Norfolk tell the first-person story of York, the African-American slave of William Clark. Dressed in character, Norfolk shares his accounts on Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery.
Norfolk will bring his storytelling back to the stage on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. as he brings to life the Harlem Renaissance with voices such as Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston.
The week of events will conclude on Friday with a special Educator’s Story Workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Like all of the other events, this workshop is free and open to the public and all skill levels.
