Society has jumped leaps and bounds in terms of racial acceptance in the last few decades. Not to say there isn’t more work to be done on the racial front, but most youngsters can’t fathom an era where segregation and oppression were normal. Separate drinking fountains have only lived in history books.
Memphis brings its audience back to the 1950s, when a white radio DJ wants to make a black club songstress famous. They only have the whole of American society standing in their way. Scored by Bon Jovi founding member Joe DiPietro and honored as the Tony Awards selection for 2010’s Best Musical, it’s time for Phoenix to see what the rest of the country is raving about. See what the Associated Press called “the very essence of what a Broadway musical should be,” packed with sexy rock n’ roll numbers and surprisingly lighthearted comedy.
