At first glance, they appear to be pleasantly evocative black-and-white photographs that celebrate the beauty of the sky. In one, the graceful outline of a tree is silhouetted in dim, fuzzy light; in another, a bird soars out of a frame filled with sun-lit clouds. But wait. What are these things falling from the sky and into the ocean? And are they objects lifted from other images and stitched onto the photograph?
Marie Navarre’s photographic work observes the horizon in a way that points out what’s not there as well as what passes through it. They are, in their own ways, tributes to silence. “I am,” she has said, “interested in those moments we all have in which we unify completely with what is in front of us. There is no separation. There is nothing to say.”
