Youth, excitement, athleticism — these aren’t words that spring to mind when describing the San Antonio Spurs. Think more along the lines of methodical, precise, andselfless. But youth and athleticism sum up the current Phoenix Suns squad quite pithily.

For Suns fans, the past decade has been a bitter dance with an exemplary San Antonio franchise that is all too reminiscent of The Tortoise and the Hare. Yes, the Spurs have routinely emerged victoriously. For Spurs fans, the Suns have been but a pesky blip on their championship-calibrated radar. But every tortoise eventually dies, and with the retirement of Tim Duncan and Coach Popovich looming ever closer, the Spurs may find themselves grappling with the difficulties of mediocrity very soon. Now, if Coach Hornacek can steal a page from the Spurs’ illustrious book and keep his verdant squad together, the Suns may just write a success story of their own.

The Champs visit US Airways Center, 201 East Jefferson Street, at 7 p.m. on Halloween, Friday, October 31. Tickets start at $36.50. Visit www.suns.com or call 602-379-2000 for details.

Fri., Oct. 31, 7 p.m., 2014
