Steve Bass, the local Phoenix artist who was involved in a head-on car collision on State Route 169 near Dewey, Arizona, underwent successful surgery on Thursday at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.

Says Bass’ sister, Lori Bassani, “Steve is still critical, but making progress every day.”

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Public Information Office Robert Bailey, the cause of the crash, which involved Bass and three Yavapai County Sheriff’s detention officers, remains under investigation.

DPS also informs New Times that a memorial service honoring the three late officers will be held Sunday at Prescott’s Yavapai College. Brian Callaghan, John Schultz, and Jose Presas died as a result of the accident.
