Steve Weiss, head honcho of No Festival Required, has been named film programmer of the soon-to-be-launched FilmBar.
Weiss brings some pretty good microcinema experience to the indie venue that plans to screen new, classic, and international flicks when it opens in late November.
In 2002, after Jeff Cochran pulled the plug on The Monkey Show film series, Weiss started No Festival Required with current New Times contributor Leslie Barton. Together, the two hosted short films and touring DIY film fests at Modified Arts before eventually presenting bigger-time productions at Phoenix Art Museum’s Whiteman Hall.
And even though Barton ditched the gig in 2007, Weiss has been able to up the ante in terms of motion pictures (The Heart Is a Drum Machine, various films by George Kuchar) and venues (Space 55, Deus Ex Machina, and the now-defunct Chandler Cinemas).
