Steve Lambert‘s the guy behind the table. He wants to talk — and not about anything specific.
He began setting up his table in 2006, near other tables with religious, political and other agendas, but the only things he’ll ask you about are the weather, what you’ve been up to, how you’re doing, and your plans for the day. The rest is up to you.
Lambert admits his idea isn’t original; people have been talking for quite some time, and there were a few guys in Germany who also set up a conversation table, but the artist and faculty member of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston encourages you to set up your own table, too.
He writes that he wants his art “to be relevant to those outside the gallery – say, at the nearest bus stop – to reach them in ways that are engaging and fun. I intend what I do to be funny, but at the core of each piece there is also a solemn critique. It’s important to be able to laugh while actively questioning the various power structures at work in our daily lives.”
