Remember the episode of Futurama in which the characters land on a planet populated solely by giant Amazonian women? During a tour of their village, the ladies stop at a basketball court. “Here stadium, where our women basketball teams play,” they say. “We no can dunk, but good fundamentals. That more fun to watch.” At which point the men, appropriately, burst out in uncontrollable laughter.

Until recently, that was the response you could expect from the average guy you asked to go to a Phoenix Mercury game. But that was before Brittney Griner. With the addition of the 6 foot 8 inch tall center from Baylor, the dunks are plentiful, the play is intense, and the games actually are more fun to watch.

The Mercury take on the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the US Airways Center, 201 East Jefferson Street. Visit wnba.com/mercury or call 602-252-9622 for tickets, $11 and up.
