Phoenix is brimming with creativity. And every other year, we put the spotlight on 100 of the city’s creative forces. Leading up to the release of this year’s Best of Phoenix issue, we’re profiling 100 more. Welcome to the 2014 edition of 100 Creatives. Up today: 28. Tyson Krank.

Tyson Krank’s up to a whole lot besides beer slinging.

You might spot the 27-year-old Tempe-based artist bar tending at arty nightlife establishment Lost Leaf, but in his off-hours he’s in the midst of preparing for two upcoming exhibitions — including one that opens at Lost Leaf in September.

The exhibition is the painter’s second in the past two years at Lost Leaf. And in October, the Palabra Collective member will show at the group’s UNION at the Biltmore pop-up gallery.

Beyond that, the creative says that he’s looking forward to developing a more interactive manner of displaying his paintings. “It’s always been a dream to get people to experience what I do,” Krank says. “I think 2015 will be a great year to start the process and put into effect the think I’ve been planing.”

Stay tuned.

I came to Phoenix with my father who owned a semi precious stone business called Fox Tibetan Turquoise.

I make art because I have always enjoyed making things or crafting in general. I think once I found a process I became totally addicted to painting. It has become such a huge part of who I am that I can’t really imagine not making stuff.

I’m most productive when I have a show coming up or like right now I have three shows lined up in the next three months plus working on a few murals. I pretty much paint or draw or make something everyday. But I tend to jam out work when I’m in over my head.

My inspiration wall is full of my dad’s work, mountains, future concept drawings, and photos of things i wish i could paint.

I’ve learned most from doing, the more I do the more I learn.

Good work should always be something that you had fun making and it should always push you to evolve what you are doing.

The Phoenix creative scene could use more collectives that bring people together, to share ideas, to colaborate. The elitist attitude sucks, and although I haven’t really been a victim, I see it happen and it’s not really cool. I love meeting people with new ideas.
