On paper, a starting lineup that includes Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Carlos Boozer looks pretty damn formidable. Turns out, that particular piece of paper is pockmarked, frayed, and dates back to about 2007. In NBA years, that’s a really long time ago.

Still, Lakers fans are hitching their wagons to these notable — albeit fading — stars. Just a few seasons ago, any prediction of the Phoenix Suns emerging victoriously from a scrum with the mighty purple and gold would’ve been a bold one, not in 2014. Coach Jeff Hornacek has a roster chock-full of young, talented and hungry ballers who are poised to make quite a splash in a stacked Western Conference.

The only splashing the Lakers are likely to do this season is, well, in the ice bucket after a lot of painful losses. The Suns host Kobe & Co. for their season opener at Phoenix’s US Airways Center, 201 East Jefferson Street, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29. Tickets start around $42. Visit www.suns.com or call 602-379-2000 for details.

Wed., Oct. 29, 7 p.m., 2014
