Having cool, liberal parents isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. Just look at Gwyneth Paltrow’s poor baby, Apple, who will undoubtedly grow up traumatized because she’s named after a high-fiber fruit and her mommy is the literal queen of shit (see www.goop.com).
But songstress Rain Perry says her own hippie upbringing was mostly a blessing. “There was freedom and wonder in being a ‘wild child,’ but there was also craziness and uncertainty,” she says, “not to mention alfalfa-sprout sandwiches that couldn’t be traded on the schoolyard and roommates named Bear or Superman I had to share the bathroom with.”
Perry relives her nomadic upbringing through multimedia slides and songs accompanied by guitarist Danny B. Harvey in the one-woman show Cinderblock Bookshelves: A Guide for Children of Fame-Obsessed Bohemian Nomads.
