When celebrities procreate the results are often newsworthy for all the wrong reasons. It’s typically the woeful tale of a wanton trust funder defaming his already tarnished father’s name. That is, unless that parent is a man who claims to have smoked marijuana on the roof of the White House.
Ergo songwriter Lukas Nelson, son of the winsome Willie, has an inherently lax approach to his tunes. Whether he was born with glassy eyes and a ponytail is a hazy detail. What’s crystal clear is Nelson’s penchant for unencumbered songwriting and a natural guitarist’s finesse a la Nelson senior. Along with band Promise Of The Real, Nelson creates a nebulous, genre-dodging sound that nods to many a style without wholly endorsing any. Forget stardust; this Nelson has struck a little pay dirt of his own.
