Every couple has at least one quirky hobby. We know one who sings incessantly, another that obsessively collects china, and a pair that raises chickens in the backyard. It’s not often that these strange practices yield millions of dollars. Not unless you happen to be Herb and Dorothy Vogel. For thirty years, the couple shared a small one-bedroom New York apartment and collected art from unknowns. After three decades, the place was packed to the gills with works by Christo, Richard Tuttle, and Robert and Sylvia Mangold. Then, in the early 1990s, the couple shocked the world by transferring their priceless collection (five moving trucks worth of paintings and sculptures) to the National Gallery of Art.
