Here it comes again, the time of year for margarita-swilling and taco-munching. The time when we revel in the Mexican army’s 1862 defeat of the French military. As well we should. If things had gone differently, we might be celebrating with snails and snobby red wine.
While most establishments north of the border have adopted this day to sell copious amounts of alcohol and sombreros, the city of Chandler with its rich Mexican heritage has developed a family-friendly Cinco de Mayo Festival with the king of small dogs as the main attraction. Each year organizers invite Chihuahuas from around the Valley to race. The competition culminates in the coronation of a king and queen pup. Prizes go to the race’s winners, along with awards for those perros deemed best-dressed and most fashionable and those with the best temperament. HALO Animal Rescue will be in attendance from twelve to four p.m. with Chihuahuas for adoption.
It won’t be all dog days, as the event includes library craft activities, live music, food, and dancing Saturday, May 4, at the Chandler Public Library Courtyard, 100 East Commonwealth Avenue, from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
