If anything good has come from Sheriff Joe’s tyranny, it’s the art being created in response. The latest creative commentary to surface is New Carpa Theater Company’s The Tears of Lives, a play by James E. Garcia, directed by Luis Avila. It tells the tale of fictional Regino Ortega, an undocumented immigrant who’s been living in America for the past two decades. Arrested by ICE agents and Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies, he’s forced to leave behind his three young children, who must sort through the drama of living on their own while also making sense of prejudice and segregation.
The show is produced by New Carpa as a special fundraiser for the Macehualli Capital Campaign.
