Early in the documentary Dangerous Living: Coming Out in the Developing World, Ashraf Zanati proclaims that his sexuality “doesn’t belong to anybody,” especially his government. In May 2001, The Cairo 52 (including Zanati) were dragged from The Queen Boat, a floating gay discotheque moored on the Nile, and systematically tortured for months by Egyptian officials. This atrocity caught the attention of the world and inflamed the sympathies of acclaimed director John Scagliotti, whose feature-length account of the social upheaval and corresponding triumph of human perseverance will rouse your spirit.
The film, narrated by activist/actress Janeane Garofalo, screens the SGI Phoenix Culture Center. A panel discussion follows.
