“Pyromaniacs Anonymous: How Fireworks…Work” @ Arizona Science Center After chillaxing on the Fourth and marveling at a fireworks production, grownups will have the chance to light up their synapses during Arizona Science Center‘s Adult’s Night Out. This First Friday, the educational hub promises an analysis of the celebratory chemical reactions behind fireworks.

Pyro Production Manager for Fireworks Productions of Arizona Kendon Victor will also talk about how attendees can get involved with professional fireworks. The talk will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 5. The free event’s seating is first-come, first-served. Register via Arizona Science Center’s website.

“I Paint My Own Reality” @ Burton Barr Central Library As part of Burton Barr Central Library‘s celebration of Frida Kahlo’s birthday, the library will host a panel discussion with the Phoenix Fridas. The group, which includes members Kathy Cano-Murillo, Carmen Guerrero, Emily Costello, Anita Mabante Leach, Annalisa Rios, Monique Sanderson-Mata, Michele Delgado, Gloria Casillas-Martinez, Veronica Verdugo-Lornell, and Diana Calderon, assembled works for Barr’s exhibition of Kahlo-inspired art, on view through July 28. The Fridas will talk about how Kahlo has inspired them artistically and in life on Thursday, July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
“Sex in China” @ Phoenix Art Museum In conjunction with Phoenix Art Museum‘s exhibition “Hidden Meanings of Love and Death in Chinese Painting,” Behind the Red Door – Sex in China author Richard Burger will discuss the Asian empire’s attitudes about sexuality during the 20th century. Burger will sign his book after the free Wednesday, July 24, discussion, which begins at 7 p.m.
