Southwest Shakespeare Company opening this season of performances with one of the Bard’s earliest comedic works, Love’s Labour’s Lost, is a welcome departure from the more tread-upon classics. As the company has earned its reputation for producing Elizabethan theater in a fun, relatable way, there may not be a better play to adapt for modern audiences than one of Will’s most poetic and ostentatious (read: tough to translate into our world of BRBs and LOLs).
David Vining directs this version of the rom-com, on stage through Saturday, September 22, in which characters are placed near an Ivy League college in 1914. The swearing off of women, Latin-loving nerds, and the famously meta play-within-a-play all follow.
