When photographer Marco Grob came to Phoenix for the Centennial celebration, he set up a booth and captured 151 attendees for the cover of this month’s TIME Magazine.
The 20 chosen portraits are featured under the signature TIME logo, and featured with the cover story, “Yo Decido,” by TIME reporter Michael Sherer.
The cover, according to TIME, aimed to illustrate the Latino vote up for grabs in Arizona. It features faces of local creatives Marcelino Quinonez and Mario Mendia, among others.
TIME is now apologizing for including the portrait of the Arizona Republic’s staff reporter Michael Schennum (behind the “M”), who’s half-White, half-Chinese, and not Latino.
When we spoke to Quinonez and Mendia last week, both noted that they had been asked about their plans to vote and whether or not they identified as Latino.
But blame the loud Centennial band or photographer’s team (Grob hasn’t returned our request for comment) — Schennum wasn’t asked. Now the magazine’s apologizing.
“Over the course of three days we photographed 151 people for the current cover,” a Time spokeswoman wrote in a statement to Yahoo News. “We took steps to ensure that everyone self-identified as Latino, that they are registered voters and that they would be willing to answer our questions. If there was a misunderstanding with one of our subjects, we apologize.”
UPDATE FEB 23, 12:34 P.M.: Schennum spoke with our sister paper at OC Weekly. And nope, he’s still not Latino. Not even a little bit.
