Phoenix Film Festival @ Harkins Scottsdale 101
Certainly, Phoenix isn’t the biggest of movie towns, but Bird City has served as shooting grounds for such notable flicks as Psycho, Everything Must Go, and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Couple its silver screen history with the annual Phoenix Film Festival, and there’s plenty of fodder for local film buffs.

The 13th edition of the fest promises more than 150 indie flicks, including programming from the International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival, PFF’s goosebump-inducing festival-within-a-festival counterpart. Screenings on Friday, April 5, include Saw (with the film’s executive producer Peter Block in attendance) and Jason Chaet’s fishy comedy Putzel. The festival continues through Thursday, April 11, at Harkins Scottsdale 101. Single screening tickets are $12, and festival passes are available for up to $300.
FOS x Cowtown Art Show @ Cowtown Skateboards
PHXAM doesn’t roll out until Saturday, but the reveling starts up at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Cowtown in Tempe. The skate shop will host an arty evening featuring live painting from Altamont and Heroin artist FOS and local artist JJ Horner. The free hangout promises free ‘za and music, too.
Expresiones Seis @ Roosevelt A.R.T.S. Market
Dulce Dance Company presents the sixth Expresiones dance festival featuring original choreography from Dulce, Desert Dance Theatre, Desert Dance Theatre, and more. Get an up-close look at the works when they’re performed at Roosevelt A.R.T.S. Market Saturday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
Pride Parade @ Third & Thomas
More than 2000 paraders will take to the street on Saturday, April 6, starting at 10 a.m. An estimated 10,000 spectators will watch hundreds of walkers, plus floats and decorated cars make their way up Third Street to Steele Indian School Park, where the Pride festival will take place through Sunday. The parade is free to watch, and admission to the festival starts at $15.
Ride + Style Arizona Qualifier @ Near Seventh Street & Lone Cactus
Cheer on local fixie racers as they compete in State Bicycle’s qualifier for the Red Bull Ride+Style, an invite-only race in San Fran on May 4 and 5. The speed demons get pedaling at noon at Ninth Place and East Lone Cactus Road on Sunday, April 7. Those who finish in the tourney’s top 10 of the will qualify to compete in Ride+Style, and the first-place rider will score a paid-for flight and hotel room during the SF competition.
