Arts and Flowers @ Phoenix Art MuseumAs any fan of Lady GaGa can attest, impressive dresses can be made outta anything these days, be it meat or measuring tape. Then there’s the funky flower-laden fashion statement created by local floral designer Anna Starkey for last year’s Arts and Flowers at Phoenix Art Museum.
This year, works of dozens of different floral folk will be
featured throughout the museum that mimic permanent visual arts pieces
on display. The weekend-long event also includes a variety of
workshops and lectures. The museum is open at 10 a.m. on Friday and
Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for
seniors and students.
Human Rights Barrio Walk @ Guerrero Park
High temperatures won’t stop supporters of the current effort to recall
Senate President (and all around Republican wingnut) Russell Pearce from
staging tomorrow’s Human Rights Barrio Walk in Mesa. This two-mile trek from Guerrero
Park to Pioneer Park will go through the heart of District 18’s barrios
(which also happens to be Pearce’s stomping grounds) and is taking place
with the intent of “raising awareness to the people of Mesa and have
[recall] petitions and even voter registration applications available.”
The walk begins at 10 a.m.
Phoenix AM @ Desert West Skateboard Plaza
That ollie you learned back in high school pales in comparison to the sort of sweet skateboard maneuvers that will take place on Saturday and Sunday over the West Valley. More than 100 different riders will be battling for skater supremacy and pulling some major stunts in the pursuit of fame and fortune. (The winner of the Skullcandy Best Trick Contest takes home a cool $2,500.) The competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 to watch, $135 to compete. Showcase Sundays @ Doc’s Place
In case you haven’t realized it yet, dawg, the world ain’t fair. For instance, a tin-ear Orange County brat can score 70 million YouTube views and an appearance on Jay Leno for her off-key singing, but the organizer of the local poetry slam won’t let your sweet stanzas to be performed at their shindig. It’s time to set things right in the world. Bring your latest spoken word epic to Doc’s for its weekly open mic featuring a variety of performers, poets, and musicians. The show starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $10.
