Hop on that Midnight Train to Georgia, or at least Chandler and the Arizona Railway Museum, for National Train Day 2012, Saturday, May 12. It seems a little suspect, but National Train Day was started by Amtrak in 2008 to celebrate the history and future of train travel. The event date corresponds to the pounding of the Golden Spike in Promontory, Utah, marking the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Train lovers — and they are everywhere — will have plenty to ooh and aah at, including an opportunity to check out train cars and parts under restoration that aren’t typically available for viewing, along with diesel engines and steam locomotives. Super-detailed model displays will also be running.
