For a fairly crummy movie, 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story did what most high-brow fare can’t hope to: It changed the world – or at least the social prospects of a lot of people with wide waistbands and high heart-attack risks who crawled out of the woodwork to hobnob with fellow ballers after the release of the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn smash.
As anyone with lingering crimson welts on their thighs from junior high knows, dodgeball is less a sport than a bloodsport in which Darwinian hunters stalk the quivering weak with dimpled red orbs. There’ll be a lot of that sort of evolutionary assassination – for cash prizes! – going on at AZ Dodgeball’s Great American Dodgeball Bash.
The pool/double-elimination tourney starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Kiwanis Park Recreation Center. Viewing is free.
