Chronicling the history of skate culture from the past half-century is a vast undertaking, but “Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art” pulls it off pretty well.
The traveling exhibit, which posts up in Chandler starting tomorrow, showcases historic decks from private collections (including boards on loan from skate pro Sam Cunningham) and defunct skate companies. There’s other eye candy, too, such as photography, sculpture, and video.
“The eye-catching images on the bottom of a skateboard are one of the purest forms of self-expression: highly personal and mostly created without artistic boundaries — just like skateboarding itself,” says curator Carrie Lederer, who first brought the show to Walnut Creek, California’s Bedford Gallery where she works.
An opening reception takes place tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at Vision Gallery, 10 East Chicago Street in Chandler. Admission is free. Go to www.visiongallery.org.
