Besides access to cheap supplies and a steady day job, few things are as invaluable to newbie artists as friends and family. After all, they’re typically unending sources of support, whether it means turning out for whatever art show you happen land or as a source of cash.
And starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14, the kith and kin of burgeoning local painters and illustrators can do both at the same time during the Paint & Patrón Art Show. The centerpiece of this monthly exhibition of emerging talent are two competitions, each offering a $250 prize. The crowd at Macayo’s Depot Cantina, 300 South Ash Avenue in Tempe, votes for the best live art creation or the best pre-existing piece on display via placing tokens (one is included with admission, each additional coin is $1) in empty Patrón bottles.
According to co-organizer Lucinda Hinojos, around 20 artists participate and the competition gets fierce. “Artists invite everyone on their Facebooks, all these friends and family show up, and people get really competitive and buy extra tokens,” she says. The winners are eventually chosen by organizers from the top two vote-getters in each category. Admission is $10 and includes a buffet. See www.paintandpatron.com.
