Vertical proficiency isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Just think of all the comforts average-height folks enjoy — waste-level countertops, overhead shower heads and, above all else, average expectations. So don’t think that a Central Arizona Tall Society (CATS) shindig is all about flexing some soaring dominance by way of gang mentality. These people have serious issues to deal with.
“The majority of the people in our club have back problems,” says Chris Dees, a CATS member for 15 years. “A lot of what our club talks about is getting around in a world geared toward average people.”
On Saturday, August 21, Dees and nearly 100 CATS members get together at the Embassy Suites, 4415 East Paradise Village Parkway South, from 6:30 p.m. to midnight to celebrate CATS’ 25th anniversary with a semi-formal dinner dance party and live music from Sun Raze.
While CATS isn’t necessarily discouraging men under 6-foot-2 and women under 5’10” from going to the event, Dees admits, “It’s not that we don’t like short people. It’s just that we like to be around other tall people. We see eye to eye.”
Those seeking CATS membership must attend three club events and, of course, meet the height requirements. And no worries about old-age shrinkage. “Once you’re in, you’re in,” Dees says.

“Taste” what Six is cookin’

Whether good taste (in figurative terms) resides in Scottsdale is debatable. But we’re confident that Six Lounge and Restaurant, 7316 East Stetson, will provide plenty of palatable pleasures on Wednesday, August 25, when it debuts its monthly event, “Taste,” from 8 to 10 p.m. Cooked up by chef Justin Beckett, the première of “Taste” will include sushi, sashimi, oysters on the half shell, seared fish, and bacon-wrapped scallops, as well as a drink menu from Level Vodka.
