The put-upon protagonist of Neil Simon’s memorable comedy God’s Favorite has to deal with the wrath of God himself, as Heavenly Father decides to make a major example of the Long Island tycoon in both comedic and Job-like fashion. Tempted by an angelic messenger (who sports a sweatshirt adorned with a gigantic “G”) to renounce his faith, Benjamin must endure every torture imaginable. It’s enough to cry out “why hast thou forsaken me?”
The Brelby Theatre Company, which recently relocated to the Valley, is presenting its rendition of the 1974 Simon-penned comedy classic, which director Shelby Maticic says anyone can relate to. “The idea of standing up for what you believe in and not backing down in the face of adversity, even when the people around you might not understand your decisions. That’s something that many of us have encountered in our lives,” Maticic says.
