Back in the day, any skilled dirt-bike rider could take his or her Yamaha or Husqvarna out into the acres of pristine desert of Maricopa County and peel out, catch air, or tear through the arid wilderness all day long.

Now look at this place, with its cookie-cutter homes flanked by paved streets to keep desert dust out of the dirt-colored palaces.

The gates open at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 16, for practice and qualifying; the main event starts at 7.
