Burton Barr Central Library This 280,000-square-foot, five-level library houses more than a half-million items in its collection. You'll also find nearly 100 public computers with Internet access, a rare-book collection, an auditorium, and hands-on learning materials like car repair manuals. With plenty of seating areas and quiet corners, the library is the perfect place to zone out and get your nerd on. Visit the library website and stay updated on monthly happenings, such as book readings, Internet classes, and Minecraft game nights. Burton Barr is located 1221 North Central Avenue on the light-rail route.
Game CoLab Game CoLab opened its doors just this year, and it has been a total hit. This members-only collaborative work space is focused on all things gaming-related -- and it's known to throw some mean parties. Membership prices range from $10 a month, which will get you basic access to the facility and events such as gaming nights every Tuesday. For $195 a month, you'll get a private desk. If you've got your gaming shiz on lockdown, $350 to $425 per month will get you a private office. If you're not ready to commit, just pay the $15 daily drop-in rate. The company is in the process of moving, so it's currently not open. But the new location will be unveiled soon. Keep an eye on www.gamecolab.org for updates.
Drawn to Comics This downtown Glendale comic book store is on top of its game. The shop hosts Heroclix tournaments every Saturday. Additionally, you can join its book club, which meets monthly and focuses on graphic novels and popular comics. Wednesday nights you can attend the weekly sketch group meetings. DTC also hosts workshops led by local artists and periodically hosts comic book launch parties. All events are open to the public, just call the shop at 623-847-9090 or visit the website for sign-up information.
This collector's mall is home to weekly Comic and Toy Show and Collector Swap Meet on Saturdays from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays starting at 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free, and a slew of vendors fill the 7,000-square-foot space. With everything from video games to action figures, comic books to sports cards, and movie memorabilia, you're likely to come across that nerdy something you've been searching for.
Co+Hoots This entrepreneur-driven collaborative workspace is the perfect place to settle in with like-minded people and get inspired. If you enjoy nerding out with fellow creatives and working alongside fun, local business-driven people, then Co+Hoots is the place for you. With dozens of local businesses working together under one roof, this space may be just what you need to get yourself out of that small business funk. Head over to the website to schedule a drop-in at $15 per day, or become a member for as little as $50 per month.
