During his recent visit to Vietnam, El Mac (who, full disclosure, we’ll always consider a local artist — no matter where he moves) recorded his artist statement for the Viet Nam The World Tour
Included in the short film are behind-the-scenes looks at one of his more recent murals in Ho Chi Minh City, as well his inspirations, and sources of subject.

And if you can’t make it out to Vietnam any time soon, here are three spots to check out an El Mac in Phoenix:

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If New Times matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.

$30,000

1. The Chocolate FactoryEl Mac painted El Paisito on the Grand Avenue gallery’s door in 2009. And while the building’s exterior has had a few paint jobs since then, the artists are always careful to tape off the boy in the hat.
2. Circle 6 StudiosThe space on the corner of Fifth Street and Roosevelt Road in downtown Phoenix has seen a few phases (a flower shop, Pravus Gallery, and now Circle 6 Studios), but the exterior has been the same since Mac painted it with Kofie in 2009.
3. Por Vida GalleryMac’s most recent hometown gig is on the side of Por Vida Gallery on 16th Street (set to open in February. And while rumor has it that he might come back to paint a couple more, we’ll be happy just soaking in the view.
